The Making of The Duck Society - Vol 1
By: Scott Threinen
Coming Spring 2011
The Duck Society Vol. 1, coming in spring 2011, will be taking an inside look into DUCKS! From behavior patterns, migrations patterns, feeding patterns north to south, and looking at what ducks really look like! As the series goes on, we will be taking an inside look into decoys, decoy spreads, concealment and calling. But we start with ducks!
In the fall of 2009 the Molt Gear crew took its first duck hunting trip to Saskatchewan. It was an eye opening adventure. Not only did we mess up every hunt, but we also ran into some of the worst luck ever. We hit deer, we had flat tires, got suck every other mile, and we froze up and faced a full moon. We learned real fast that chasing ducks was a lot different than sitting on a bunch of geese….we needed to regroup!
What we found out was duck migrations are really strung out…so it depended on what string we wanted to hunt. Calendar ducks, freeze line ducks, snow line ducks or moon ducks! Once we got a good gauge on what bunch we wanted to chase, it started to then become a race against time….and what I mean by time is food!
As we got into the thick of the ducks we started to learn that mallards are one of the most aggressive feeding animals we have ever seen! We also started to realize that a 30 mile afternoon trip for them was the norm! To get under ducks day in a day out, the weather and food source in an area was key…. they are pigs on the move!
Once we got into the south, the game changed again. Food, weather, and habitat all changed the way ducks acted! It was interesting also to figure out what ducks actually where in the different areas of the south. Hens tend to migrate to one state, while drakes and other ducks are in another. The hunting styles and calling also changed dramatically. We found out that duck hunting is different in every part of the county.
The Duck Society Vol 1 will take an inside look into all of this, from the migration, to feeding habits, and different hunting styles. Learn as we and enjoy the journey as much as we do, the duck society should be entertaining and informative. We learned a lot chasing ducks from Saskatchewan to Tennessee!
We are still putting together the newest waterfowl hunting video from the Molt Gear Crew. Here is a chance to get a taste of the new The Duck Society DVD in our teaser video. Please note, this is just a 'teaser' trailer.
Stay tuned here or on our Molt Gear Facebook page for availability and an extended Duck Society trailer for your viewing pleasure.
