Kyle Foli

Kyle Foli MG Society StaffName: Kyle Foli

Hometown: Small coal mining town of Dugger, Indiana

Occupation: Power Plant Safety Specialist: I have been involved in safety for 20 years. I have worked in  Manufacturing, Automotive, Chemical and Utilities. Every day is something new in my field.

How you got started: Several years back I had a buddy who asked me to go on an early September season teal. It was hot bugs, everywhere…absolutely love it! I was hooked from that day forward!

What you hunt/favorite to hunt: Duck, Goose, Turkey and Deer. My Favorite to hunt is Mallards. There is nothing better than scouting greenheads and finding the “X”. Scouting to me is just as fun and gives you that water fowling high knowing that you did your homework. Next to my family, hunting mallards is the holy grail of water fowling in my book.

Favorite Place to Hunt: Some of my favorite places are sheet water in fields and river backwater. They are by far some of the deadliest spots for mallards, but these types of spots appear and disappear with the rise and fall of rivers, ditches and creeks. If you are not looking for them…you are missing out!

Best Hunt Ever: I have had two that I would consider the best. My first one consisted of a three man limit of ducks and geese, but two of the six geese had $100 dollar reward bands. The second was in January and all the water in the area was froze, except for one pothole that we had kept open through the efforts of eights guys breaking ice at various times. We went out there and took 48 mallards and gadwalls in two hours. It was a fantastic hunt not only from a results point of view, but from all the hard work we put into keeping it open.

Philosophy towards hunting: Do your homework! Scout, scout, scout and then scout some more. Don’t be afraid to knock on doors either!

Favorite Decoy Spread: I like setting out small groups of decoys, anywhere from 3 to 6 in a bunch. I like to bigger bunches where I want to block the birds from going and funnel them to me. Natural looking is the key though to it all!

Best Calling advice: Is to start off calling soft and not overly aggressive. I have got a lot of ducks to turn with a soft comeback call, don’t just throw everything at them right away….save your best and most aggressive stuff until you really need it.

Best Hunting Tip: You will only get out of a hunt what you put into it, and that all starts with scouting. Do your homework while you scout too, like where the birds are coming form, how they look in the field, how mach are the talking etc. The second tip is concealment, you have to have a good hide…scouting and concealment goes along ways in being successful.

Why do you love hunting: I love waterfowl hunting because it’s a constant challenge to figure out what they are going to want that day as far as calling, decoy spread etc. What a duck or goose does today might be totally different tomorrow, so it’s a constant change…I love to challenge of trying to figure it all out!
