Kody Karloff
Name: Kody Karloff
Hometown: Yutan, Nebraska
Occupation: Owner Double K Farms
How you got started: I got started waterfowl hunting at the age of 12 on the Platte River in Nebraska. I worked all summer to earn enough money to buy a 20. Ga and went on my first duck hunt that fall. Watching the greenheads fall into the decoys that fall got me hocked for life…will always remember that first season!
What you Hunt/Favorite to Hunt: Ducks, Geese Deer and Turkey. I have to say my favorite is the Mallard. Every hunt is different with them, same thing never happens twice…they are addicting!
Favorite Place to Hunt: The duck club that we have just off the Platte River in Eastern Nebraska. To be able to shoot birds day in and day out from a permanent blind is the ultimate challenge…and I love that!
Best Hunt ever: It was a huge migration day and the birds just kept pouring in from the north. It was me and seven friends and we worked all day for our limit. The hunts you put a lot of work into and grind out a limit are always the best!
Philosophy towards hunting: Scout and Hunt hard! The only way to have consistent success is to put your time in and hunt smart….do the work to get it done!
Favorite Decoy spread: The best spread is the one that fit’s the conditions, weather changes waterfowl and how they act, eat, move, you name it. So match the spread with the conditions. We hunt a lot of migration birds along the river, so we tend to use a lot of decoys to gain attention, but don’t think just because you have a lot of decoys out you don’t have to be natural. You realistic spreads no matter the number, and change with the weather!
Best Calling advice: Use team calling to your advantage. Work with each other, go back and forth in rhythm…it sounds natural and will set you apart from other hunters. To many people compete against one another out in the field…work together to be more successful!
Best hunting Tip: Concealment is key! You can have the best decoys, calling, spot to hunt and if your sticking out its game over. There is no excuse for poor concealment, and it’s the key to the hunt!
Why you Love Waterfowl Hunting: The challenge. It’s the perfect combination of hard work and results. You put the time in, you will be rewarded! Just an awesome thing to be in a blind with friends when the migration is on!
