Sleeper Hold….

Stacks of Sleeper DecoysWhen it comes to waterfowl hunting I have always stressed realism…in calling, flagging, spread location in the field, and the look of the decoy spread itself. Rochester Minnesota offers some great late season hunting, so we wanted to have a spread that was realistic to what we were seeing from geese this time of year. A Canada goose burns a ton of energy when flying and they burn even more when the temperatures drop. That’s why late in the year they fly from point A to point B pretty much in a straight line to conserve as much energy as possible. Sometimes when the temps drop to far, like to -15 below the birds don’t even fly, because they will save more energy sitting all day then they will flying out and back and consuming food.

Sleeper Decoys in ActionLate in the year, even if the flight is only a mile or two, what you will see after a goose lands in a field is they will lie down and go right to sleep. Basically re-energizing themselves for the feed and they will usually be in this sleeping position for an hour plus…depending on how cold it is. So we decided this year to make our decoy investment about our favorite and most successful time of the year to hunt and purchased a mass of sleeper shells.  Matching what the birds are doing and giving them a look that few others have is key. A lot of guys think sleeper shells are just for ice edges but that’s not true,  if your best time of year to hunt is late season in the snow, think about getting some sleeper shells, it can be a game changer. They don’t take up much room, there stackable and you can add numbers to your spread in a hurry.

A good day's work If you can call this work) Happy goose hunters

Until next time, hunt alive!
