An Inside Look Into The Goose Society
By: Scott Threinen
3 Time World Live Goose Calling Champion
The Goose Society follows the same principles as our calling instructional series Bad Grammer, and that's education using the "bird first" philosophy. This series will be taking an inside look into decoys, decoy spreads, concealment, calling, scouting, behavior, and comparing them to what the bird looks like, acts like, and sounds like. We believe the only real information, and education can come from the bird, so hundreds of hours where spent in front of the goose studying.
The second principle is entertainment. We try to make our media fun, and real. In this production we not only try to keep things enjoyable and moving, but also real by hunting in areas the viewer can relate too. Our hunts, actually all but one are against late season pressured birds in the snow. We wanted to create hunts and situations that are reality, and ones that waterfowlers faces day in and day out.
The third thing we try to do is go outside the box. We wanted this production to be different so our hunting includes; using 18 decoys and sitting in a slough, digging in along a fence line, hunting standing corn, setting up in low areas in fields, and hunting in weather conditions not seen on film. With the instruction we wanted to go outside the box as well, we want to break down the inside stuff, from why we set up where we did, to how we created a food sources, why we approach our hide from the back, why black and white shadows work, and how to use the 180 degree rule out hunting The information we think is different as well. We break down different angles of glare and when you can see it, we look at the structure of geese compared to decoys, when we use shells, and also how education and pressure starts with the first hunt of the year.
The making of The Goose Society made us better hunters, and believe it can do the same from you. We also believe the information will open eyes and answer some questions that have been topics in blinds for years. The Goose Society part one is only a start of what's to come, but the Molt Gear team is proud of the result and already look forward to the next one.
